Remote Management

Remote Management: the layer of Intelligence that transforms Public Lighting

Public Lighting is one of the most widespread urban infrastructures and, at the same time, historically one of the least monitored. For decades, the lighting network operated in reactive mode: switching depended on individual photoelectric relays, and failures were identified only when citizens noticed and complained. The result is a slow, costly and unpredictable maintenance cycle.

Remote Management breaks with this model by adding a layer of Intelligence over the lighting network. Each luminaire gets a controller capable of communicating operating data and receiving remote commands, which turns a passive asset into a manageable data point within an IoT architecture.

How the Remote Management architecture works

In technical terms, a Remote Management system is made up of three main layers:

  • Device layer, formed by the controllers installed at each light point, which monitor voltage, current, power, power factor, operating hours and operating status, and also execute switching and dimming commands
  • Communication layer, which carries data from the field to the management platform with low-power, wide-coverage technologies such as NB-IoT, which combines range, penetration in urban areas and energy efficiency
  • Application layer, where data is processed and turned into information for decision-making, with real-time monitoring, alarms, consumption analysis and scheduling of operating profiles.

Technical and operational gains

The digitalization of Public Lighting generates measurable benefits on different fronts:

  • Data-driven maintenance, with automatic failure detection, targeted action by the teams and a shorter mean time to repair
  • Energy efficiency, with dimming and operating curves adjusted to each road and time of day, plus individual metering that provides the basis for billing and energy auditing
  • Asset management and predictability, with the history of each point to track the service life of components and plan investments
  • Safety and urban quality, with consistently lit roads and failures corrected quickly.

From metering to management

The central point of Remote Management is not just connecting luminaires, but integrating Public Lighting into the logic of Smart Cities. When each light point becomes a reliable data source, public managers can operate with real-time information, plan based on evidence and prove results with objective indicators.

This is where NOX Smart Lighting fits in. M2M’s Remote Management solution connects each light point and delivers end-to-end Intelligence, from metering to management, with TIM Brasil connectivity.
