Smart Metering: the foundation for a new smart water management in Brazil

When people talk about infrastructure, they usually think of roads, energy or telecommunications. But water infrastructure is the silent foundation of public health, food production, industry and urban life. And, like any critical infrastructure, it only generates real value when it is monitored, integrated and managed with strategy and technology.

At a time when water scarcity, operational losses and pressure for efficiency challenge the water and sanitation sector, smart water metering (Smart Metering) emerges as a key piece in rethinking the management model in Brazil.

As Alejandro Maceira, founder of Smart Water Magazine, highlighted in the article “Building the future of water from the ground”, the water sector is at a historic crossroads: remain stuck in outdated models or move toward more sustainable, digital and data-centered management.

Management from the ground up

In Brazil, where system losses average more than 40% according to SNIS data, Smart Metering represents a concrete opportunity to transform this scenario. With smart sensors, NB-IoT connectivity and integrated analytics platforms, water and sanitation companies can have full visibility of network behavior, from individual consumption to the detection of leaks or fraud.

At M2M, we call this management from the ground up: turning field data into decisions, and decisions into real impact.

“Measuring accurately is the first step to acting efficiently. Smart metering is no longer just an operational tool and becomes a strategic management tool for the water and sanitation sector,” says Rafael Mesquita Gondim, Commercial Director of M2M.

More than technology, we are talking about decision-making capacity. When data flows in real time, managers can anticipate patterns, plan maintenance more quickly and create fairer tariff policies. Digitalizing the metering system also strengthens transparency with consumers and allows closer and more responsive management.

With a presence in the energy and Public Lighting markets and, now, in water, M2M continues to expand its portfolio of IoT Solutions, focusing on the development of smarter, more efficient cities that are prepared for the future.
