Public Lighting

Public Lighting: from maintenance infrastructure to a strategic smart city asset

Public Lighting is at the heart of the Smart City. But most municipalities still treat it as maintenance infrastructure rather than as a strategic Urban Management asset.

This is one of the biggest bottlenecks in the digital transformation of Brazilian cities. Global data show that Public Lighting accounts, on average, for 40% of municipalities’ electricity consumption. In Brazil, this scenario is aggravated by the lack of real-time monitoring, the absence of structured service protocols and the difficulty of measuring energy losses, deviations and theft on the grid.

The result is compromised budgets, poorly managed contracts and cities paying for energy that is not being converted into light for citizens.

Remote Management changes this logic

By adopting IoT technology applied to the lighting network, municipalities gain real visibility over each light point, remote control of circuits, automatic failure alerts and the ability to make data-driven decisions, rather than relying on manual calls or inaccurate reports. The impacts are concrete:

  • Lower operating and energy costs
  • Better quality of service to citizens
  • Ancillary revenue generated from Remote Management data
  • A solid database for future Smart City projects.

More than energy efficiency, Remote Management creates an urban data infrastructure. The connected luminaire is no longer just a light point and becomes a sensor distributed across the city, capable of integrating cameras, environmental sensors and Public Safety systems.

This is the direction in which the most advanced cities in the world are moving, and Brazil has national technology to make it happen now. At M2M, we developed NOX Smart Lighting to deliver this level of operational intelligence to Brazilian cities, with more than 550 thousand points sold, more than 40 cities in operation and the first solution certified by INMETRO in Brazil in this category.

The transformation of Public Lighting into strategic infrastructure is already happening. Is your city part of it?
